I was looking through an old journal, and found a list I made a month before our wedding. I called it 30 things to do before I turn 30. Some of the things on that list are things I’ve already done – like start a blog, get married, and get a puppy. I don’t even remember writing the list, but it did make me think. Maybe now is the time to continue this list of dreams. I think it will be fun to see how many of these I actually get do by the time I’m 30. I’m giving myself every right to change my mind on wanting to do some of these things. Some items on this list are serious and practical. They are the things I should be doing anyway (save money, I’m looking at you). Some aren’t serious at all. You won’t see anything crazy on there like skydiving because I’m a wimp who is terrified of heights.. I’m not going to go on a specific quest to do everyone of these items, but I will share about them on here (at my discretion) if and when I do them. I’m just going to let them happen if they happen. The last thing I need is another list that will stress me out.
So here it is, my 30 before 30 list as it stands on October 12, 2011, in no particular order:
- watch Gone With the Wind
- visit the Grand Canyon
- finish making a quilt
- teach someone(s) about Christ and/or have a Bible study with someone
- decide what I want to get my Master’s in
- visit Savannah, Georgia
- lose weight & take care of myself (drink water, eat better, all that fun stuff)
- participate in and complete NaNoWriMo
- research and learn more about adoption
- write a book
- get involved in something I care about
- gather and compile family recipes (already working on this one. Is that cheating?)
- buy a swing and decorate our back porch
- go swimming in the river just like when I was a kid and not worry about the mud
- plant a garden
- watch all the Star Wars movies in a short period of time
- read 300 books
- develop a signature recipe or a meal full of signature recipes
- finally get the hang of making biscuits that are almost but not quite as good as Ree’s
- entertain lots for family and friends
- go hiking
- save money
- learn how to make bread
- get my ham radio license (nerd)
- learn calligraphy
- go to the National Championship game if Bama makes it there again
- create new holiday traditions
- read and study the Bible from Genesis to Revelation
- grow at my job
- become a mother (maybe? one day? not rushing this one!)

Mine are kind of…general. A lot of them are things I used to do pre-sickness that I’d like to do again. When I was in high school, I had this huge list of things like go to Italy, go skydiving, go camping for a whole week, etc. But then after everything happened, I had to revise it. But I think just because it’s simpler doesn’t make it worse. And it’s not just before 30. I’d be happy to accomplish these things at any point in my lifetime.
1. Go on a hike/go caving again.. And not get lost….again.
2. Get straight A’s one semester (hahahahaha okay I was reaching for the stars with that one)
3. Go ice skating
4. Swim (I don’t think that’ll ever happen. I’m not even supposed to take baths.) OR TAKE A BATH. (I just added the bath part.)
5. Walk around a museum
6. Go to the Jack Daniel’s festival again and eat that delicious corn
7. Spend a day shopping
8. Spend a day at the zoo
9. Graduate
10. Participate in Nanowrimo one year
11. Get married
12. Actually have the energy to do all the things planning a wedding entails
13. Be able to go on a honeymoon and do more than just be sick the whole time
14. Go a whole weekend without lying down (except to sleep).
15. Go a whole month without a doctor’s appointment
16. Take less than 10 meds daily
17. Compile a nut-less and peach-less recipe book. And be able to cook those things. (Trey’s allergic to those things)
18. Adopt a kid (or kids).
19. Lose the extra weight (but i have a feeling that will require coming off the florinef and hormones…which….isn’t happening anytime soon)
20. Have my own pet (accomplished this one!!!!)
21. Have traditions for each holiday
22. Have some weird voting tradition where my kids know voting day is super important. I don’t know. Extra cookies on voting day?
23. Make a whole meal
24. Actually finish a scrapbook
25. Play an instrument again (not going to happen).
26. Come off Florinef (this happened. But then….it un-happened. Haha)
27. Never go to physical therapy again (okay this one is already being proven false? I don’t understand how i thought it counted as a goal. But I wrote it down anyway.)
28. Get at least 8 hours of sleep at night for at least 3 nights in a row.
29. Complete the entirety of one of each of the following books: sudoku, word searches, coloring. (This has been on my list since I was in elementary school. I don’t understand it. I also don’t understand why I can’t seem to accomplish it, or why I can’t bring myself to take it off my list.)
30. Ride in a horse-drawn carriage
Okay I’m going to stop myself. This could go on forever. I literally have a whole notebook full of things I want to do. They’re all simple now. But that’s okay. Simple doesn’t mean unimportant.
I agree with what you said about being happy to accomplish these in my life time. I’m not going to try to cram certain things in 6 years if it turns out the time isn’t right.
2. I believe in you!
7. I like to shop
10. I’ve decided signing up for NaNoWriMo every year and failing miserably has become my yearly nano tradition.
15 & 16 I’m praying for those for yoU!
22. Can I get cookies when I vote, too?
29. I love that goal!
This is so neat, Beth. I want a 30 Before 30 list, too!
I don’t remember writing my original list from that old journal, but I’m glad I did! It reminded me of things I want to try/do!
I love this idea! I posted my life list recently but that’s nowhere near as cool as discovering an old list you’ve already ticked lots of things off. Sharing things like this is really exciting and it’s inspiring and interesting to see what you added … makes me think of things I’d like to add to mine, and maybe to make a different version of stuff I want to do before I’m 30 – I only have 5 and a half years left after all!
Nice list! I have a few similar items on mine =) Good luck completing it! You can do it!
I just checked out your list. My favorite on there is #30 – make a scrapbook about it. What a wonderful idea. Thanks for reading!
