Manage It Monday – Paper vs Electronic

20130506-073147.jpg

In this day of having apps and devices available to take care of almost anything, many people are turning to technology to help with productivity, planning, and organization. Others stick to the tried and true method of a pen and a sheet of paper or notebook. Personally, I use both. I’m using apps and electronics more and more, but for planning and some notes, I still rely on pen and paper. Which method is best? Googling the issue brings up article after article discussing this debate. The articles carefully point out all the advantages and disadvantages of each particular method. Using electronic methods allows you to sync your lists and notes across multiple devices, but what happens when your battery dies in the middle of an important meeting? Paper is fast and simple, but a gust of wind or a knocked over cup of coffee can ruin your to do list and your day. I’m not sure which method is best, and I don’t think there is a right answer. My answer to this question is use what works for you. My Manage it Monday post for this week will give you some points to consider when contemplating whether paper or app will work best for you.

Use paper if:

  • the office supply section of any store makes your heart pitter-patter
  • physically crossing things off a list makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something
  • you need to be able to see an overview of your schedule but also the details of each day
  • writing things down automatically commits things to your memory
  • you like using different pens and actually prefer writing to typing
  • you’ve always loved shopping for school supplies at the start of a new school year
  • you like to pick out notebooks and journals with cute designs
  • you like things that are simple, quick, and easy

Use electronic if…

  • shiny new tablets, phones, or computers make your heart pitter-patter
  • you need to sync your lists and notes across many devices
  • you use an Outlook calendar for work and want to have your personal calendar all in the same place
  • your motto is to always have a backup
  • you enjoy trying out new apps and methods to stay organized electronically
  • you want your calendar, to do list, address book, notes, email, web browser, e-book library, music, and games to be all on the same device
  • you have many recurring tasks and meetings that you don’t want to rewrite
  • you want to share your schedule, lists, and notes with a team or your family
  • you like things that are innovate, new, and fun to use

Of course, you can always use a combination of both paper and electronic if that works best for you. I’m still learning what I like to use each method for, but I’ll probably always have my trusty planner and a physical notebook close by. Is there anything I’ve left off? Which method do you use to stay organized?

Three Things Thursday – first one for May

1. I’ve been busy trying to get the outside of the house pretty for Spring & Summer. I’ve already cleaned out the flower bed and planted new flowers. We still need to pressure wash, and some of the flowers aren’t doing well despite watering every day (maybe it’s the cooler weather we’ve had)? Other than that, I’m happy with how the front yard is looking so far. I’m also working on a mini makeover of our back porch. Hopefully I’ll have it done in time to enjoy the rest of Spring.

2. My cousin Allison is now a Scentsy consultant, and my mom had a party for her a couple weekends ago. I love my new warmer! I didn’t realize it would make little hearts on the wall. Bonus!

I also ordered 3 bars from her because I just ran out of the ones I had. This time I got Camu Camu, Paradise Punch, and Sunny & Share. I had such a hard time deciding though. I’m hosting a party for her in June. What are your favorite scents? I need ideas on what to stock up on!

3. In May, I’m going to try to participate in two of the photo challenges on Instagram. I’m sure I won’t post to them every day, but there are some fun prompts. I’m doing the popular #fmsphotoaday and a new one called #isewphotochallenge. If you’re on Instagram, my user name is @bethp146.

Happy Thursday!

What I’m Passionate About

20130430-081659.jpg

What am I passionate about? When I first started thinking about this week’s Year Long Blogging Challenge topic, I thought it would be an obvious question to answer. I’m passionate about the things I blog about. Then I started thinking about the things I don’t blog about. I don’t share all the details on some aspects of my life, but I care about those things, too. I also thought about all the things that I claim to be passionate about that I don’t make time to do, whether out of choice or necessity. This topic really got me thinking about what matters to me.

So how do I answer this question?

1. I’m passionate about living this life on earth in the best way I can while looking forward to eternity.
2. I’m passionate about my faith, and I could always do a better job about living and professing it.
3. I’m passionate about maintaining and growing a strong relationship with my husband.
4. I’m passionate about soaking up time spent with those I love and enjoying all the little, everyday moments.
5. I’m passionate about stories. People, books, journals, quilts, antiques, .etc. all have stories to tell. I love finding, hearing, and telling these stories.

What are you passionate about?

Manage It Monday: Weekly Planning

20130428-235127.jpg

Weekends are wonderful. They’re usually a little less structured than the rest of the week. While I usually have projects and things I want and need to get done on the weekends, I also try to fit in as much fun, relaxation, and family time as possible. Mental breaks are so needed, but by Sunday night I always start to wonder about the coming week. Thoughts of deadlines and responsibilities creep back in, and it’s easy to let them stress you out. I try to set aside at least a few minutes on Sundays to plan for the week ahead. This ensures I am prepared and have a general idea of what needs to get done before I get to enjoy another weekend!

20130429-002332.jpg

This is how I do my weekly planning:

1. Gather supplies. All I usually need is my planner and a pen. I sometimes grab a small notebook just in case as well.
2. Take a quick glance at the week ahead. I turn to the weekly view of my planner and look over any appointments or to dos that I’ve already scheduled. Usually my week looks pretty empty at this point unless I have a lot of already scheduled events written down.
3. If they aren’t already written, be sure to jot down any events, meetings, or appointments on the appropriate day.
4. Write down daily or recurring tasks. I write in my personal Bible study and also my cleaning routine. Some weeks I know I can’t follow the cleaning routine due to my schedule and some weeks I end up doing all my cleaning on one day. It just depends on the week.
5. Schedule any other projects or to do items. This week, I knew I wanted to write down quilting each day because I’m trying to get the quilt I’m working on now finished in the next few weeks.
6. Plan meals. I’ll probably write another post on this later. This step takes me the longest because I’m so indecisive.

After I’m finished, I feel ready to take on the week! This weekly planning gives me a good overview. Any other little details and to do items get filled in as the week goes on. I like going to sleep on Sunday night knowing what’s coming up.

How do you get ready for a new week?

2 Years

20130426-224502.jpg
{These are two little presents I bought for myself this week. The bracelet is from Alabama Forever. All proceeds go towards tornado recovery in the state of Alabama.}

April 27, 2011 was not a good day for the southeast and the state of Alabama. It was the most terrifying day of my life. Two years have passed now, and our house and lives are back to normal. Yet, I’ll never forget the impact that day and the months that followed had on our first year of marriage. We had a rough time, but it could have been so much worse. I don’t want to dwell too much on the negative, but I also don’t want to forget the lessons I’ve learned and how much I’ve changed since then. We are moving on to new experiences and enjoying each moment.

I’m writing this on Friday night after spending some time at the river this evening. My grandmother fried fish, and she sent M home with some peach cobbler. We are sitting on the couch watching I Love Lucy reruns. The clothes dryer is running and Bailey and Charlie are chewing on rawhides. It’s a rainy night. Thankfully, nothing severe is expected, but a clap of thunder sounds occasionally. I tense up when it happens, but I know Who is in control. When more storms come our way, no matter what, God will see us through. We are so blessed!

These are some of the posts I’ve written relating to the storms:

Rebuilding and recovery is still going on all over the state. It will take years to fully get back to normal in some places. I have written about our personal experience since this is my blog where I record my memories. This is my story, but I don’t want to forget or downplay the stories of everyone else affected. I am so proud of how far our community and cities like Hackleburg, Tuscaloosa, and Cullman have come since that horrible day. In many ways, we are stronger than ever. I love my Sweet Home Alabama!

This is a bittersweet anniversary to be sure. Two years have passed, and today, I am just so thankful.

{Sorta} Hamburger Stroganoff

20130423-213327.jpg

I made this a few weeks ago for supper and have been meaning to post it. M loves hamburger helper, but it’s not my favorite thing in the world. I was trying to come up with something easy to make after work that he would like. This fit the bill! The reason I called this recipe sorta hamburger stroganoff is because just about all the recipes I’ve seen for stroganoff call for mushrooms and egg noodles. Neither M or I are mushroom fans, and he doesn’t care for egg noodles either. If you want a more traditional stroganoff, you can easily add in mushrooms and serve over noodles instead. This recipe was quick to throw together and delicious!

1 package bow tie pasta, cooked according to package directions
1 lb ground beef
2 tbsp butter
1 onion, chopped
1/3 cup water
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp Paprika
1 tsp parsley
1 tsp lemon juice

1. Melt 1 tbsp butter in a large skillet over medium heat, swirling to cover the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle salt over the butter. Add chunks of ground beef and cover with salt. Don’t stir. Let cook until one side is brown and then flip. Finish browning and remove pieces with a slotted spoon to a paper towel lined plate.
2. Pour off remaining grease from pan. Add 1 tbsp butter and the onion to the pan. Sauté onions until golden brown. Move to one side of the pan. Add water to deglaze. Reduce heat. Scrape up the brown bits while stirring.
3. Remove pan from heat and add milk, cream of chicken soup, lemon juice, paprika, parsely, 1/4 tsp salt, and pint Worcestershire sauce. Stir until smooth. Put back on eye and turn heat back up to medium. Heat until sauce just starts to bubble. Add hamburger meat. Stir. Reduce heat and let simmer. Serve over bow tie pasta.

(Oh, I borrowed the method for browning the ground beef from this Simply Recipes post. It really made a huge difference!)

Nothing But Sincerity as Far as the Eye Can See

Here I am posting about pumpkins in April. The YLBC topic this week is “what is your favorite cartoon?” I have a deep appreciation for Charlie Brown, Linus, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang. My absolute favorite is It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Pure genius. April showers bring October pumpkins? We’ll go with that.

Do you have a favorite cartoon?
