Gift Ideas

Gifts are one of my love languages. They came in second only to “words of affirmation” when I took that assessment . I think they came in second because I just love to pick out gifts for the people I love. It sounds corny, but that’s one of my favorite parts of this time of year. I feel so happy when I find something that I think is just perfect. Shopping for gifts becomes somewhat of an exciting special mission for me. I try to pick out gifts that are really personalized to the recipient, but I do have some favorite standbys.

Today, I’m linking up with Leslie at Lambert’s Lately to share some of my favorite things to give. Some of these are things I’ve given in the past and others are ideas I had while writing this post.

1. Journals

I could write posts and posts on this subject. Chances are I’ve probably given you a journal or notebook at some point if you know me well in real life. My favorites lately are this leather one I found at Barnes and Noble and also the Martha Stewart for Staples ones.

2. Tyler Candles
I love the Tyler scent!

3. K-Cups

We love our Keurig, but k-cups can get expensive. Especially when I take coffee to work with me every morning in the winter. I thought this might be a good gift for coffee lovers coupled with coffee mugs.

4. Books
I’m that un-fun person who likes to give picture books and easy to read chapter books to my cousins’ kids. M is much more fun and picks out cool toys to give instead, but there’s something about books.

5. Scarves, costume jewelry, and small decorative items from local gift shops. I love just browsing around some of my favorite local stores because I never know what I will find.

6. Food wrapped in pretty packages.
Cookies, cheese straws, fudge, peppermint bark… Anything yummy!

7. Christmas ornaments
When we go out of town, I love to look for a new ornament for our tree and one to give to my mom. This is sort of a tradition in our family. My mom has already given me a Hallmark ornament this year that’s so cute. I can’t wait to hang it on our tree & take a photo.

What I’m Loving Wednesday

Today I’m linking up at This Kind of Love for What I’m Loving Wednesday.

  • I am loving the signs of Spring that are all around. The reawakening of God’s creation is an exciting thing to witness each year. The warm, sunny days lately have been wonderful. I’ve been listening to the song “I Was Made for Sunny Days” by the Weepies on repeat. It’s like that song was written for me!
  • I am loving this bag of chocolate that my mother-in-law mailed me. She knows I love my Dove dark chocolate. This kind has raspberry swirls. I had never had it before, but it is so yummy! My in-laws are so sweet.

  • I love Daylight Savings Time. Getting used to the time change is a hassle, but it’s worth it! I love getting home before dark. I forsee many days of walking Bailey and Charlie around the neighborhood ahead.
  • Speaking of Bailey and Charlie, I’m loving that they are the best of friends now. M sent me this photo of them while we were camping out at my parents’ house during the storms a couple of weeks ago. Please excuse their messy hair. I hadn’t brushed it that day – it was hectic. Bailey has gotten a trim (by me) since this was taken. I love my sweet puppies so much! They really are “our girls”.

  • I’m loving my Nook. The e-ink makes me feel like I’m reading a “real” book, and it doesn’t hurt my eyes like a backlit screen does. I’ve got several pdf’s of articles I’m using to research for my current writing project downloaded to the e-reader. It has been getting a lot of use lately!

  • I love all the encouragement and sweet words from my readers. Y’all are the bestest.

Happy Wednesday :)

Swing Low, Sail High

Many precious memories are tied to the spot where I’m writing this. It is a pleasant Alabama summer evening. The heat and humidity have taken the night off. I’m taking advantage of this wonderful weather and writing this from the front porch swing at my parents’ house. My late grandfather built this swing. It is simple. It is sturdy. It is perfect. What is it about swings that reach right to my heart? Is it the pull of my southern roots? Is it that this specific swing has been hanging here my entire life? Is it the hours I have spent here? There are a number of reasons why swings are some of my favorite things. They have been a constant presence in my life. For me, swings are a symbol. The various swings in my life could tell so many stories about who I was and who I am.

This swing that my grandfather built calms my soul. It is a place of prayer, reflection, laughter, and learning. It could tell the story of a freckled face red headed girl spending an entire summer day reading a library book. It could tell the story of a dog named Murphy who kept her company while she read. It could tell the story of a family of four watching lightning bugs and just spending time together. It might mention two sisters laughing, playing, singing, and making up games. It could tell you about a teenage girl listening to the radio and sharing secrets with her friends. It could tell the story of a girl lying alone dreaming up stories, thinking about her life, and wondering about the future.

The swing that used to be on the porch at the river was also a favored spot. It could tell the story of a girl and her cousins singing country songs from an old radio. It could talk about a grandmother telling stories about what life was like when she was a little girl. It could describe homemade ice cream, big catches, and dripping bathing suits. It could tell you every lyric of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. It could tell the story of a family that loves one another no matter what.

The swings at Camp Ney-a-ti – in the Peace Hut or at the rec hall- were the favorite places to congregate at camp. They could tell the story of laughter and conversation. They could tell many stories about the best week every summer. They could tell you Bible stories taught there that stay in one’s heart forever.

The swing at a dear friend’s house could tell the story of thankfulness. It could tell the story of a girl swinging one of two precious babies to sleep. It could tell of the love and thankfulness for these girls’ health and for the influence of their mother.

Playground swings are similarly special. The swing set my dad built for us in our backyard is a story of the childhood of two girls. It could talk about the swing and sing game, olden days, and butterfly kingdom. The swings on the playground at school could tell the story of children and their games and alliances and arguments. The swings in a park near my cousin’s house could tell the story of a girl and her cousin singing every word to a Bewitched song. Porch swings. Swing sets. They are important to me.

As soon as we move back into our house, I’m hanging up a swing…
