Lunch Break Check-In

20130517-114119.jpg

Hey y’all! I am posting this from the Kroger parking lot while on my lunch break. I had to run in and grab a few things, and now I need to pick up something for lunch and take it back to work. Since I didn’t get a real post written for Thursday or today, I just wanted to pop in and say hi. It’s been one of those blah, discouraging weeks, and I just haven’t felt like myself. Our house has been a mess with dishes piled high in the sink and dog food spilled all over our bathroom thanks to two doxies I know. I finally got caught up on my cleaning last night, and I’m ready to put this week behind me and enjoy the weekend! Some weeks are just like this, I guess, and that’s okay. It makes me appreciate the sunny, happy, glorious days!

One of the passages in my daily reading plan yesterday was Psalm 136.
Psalm 136:1
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

God is good all the time! Through sunny weeks and blah weeks. Through messy houses and sleepless nights and days when you’ve got your act together. I’m so thankful for His love!

Next week I have some posts planned that I’m really excited about – cheese straws, managing your crazy expectations of yourself, a small historical town, and more! Until then, I hope you have a fantastic weekend! – Beth

Three Things Thursday – first one for May

1. I’ve been busy trying to get the outside of the house pretty for Spring & Summer. I’ve already cleaned out the flower bed and planted new flowers. We still need to pressure wash, and some of the flowers aren’t doing well despite watering every day (maybe it’s the cooler weather we’ve had)? Other than that, I’m happy with how the front yard is looking so far. I’m also working on a mini makeover of our back porch. Hopefully I’ll have it done in time to enjoy the rest of Spring.

2. My cousin Allison is now a Scentsy consultant, and my mom had a party for her a couple weekends ago. I love my new warmer! I didn’t realize it would make little hearts on the wall. Bonus!

I also ordered 3 bars from her because I just ran out of the ones I had. This time I got Camu Camu, Paradise Punch, and Sunny & Share. I had such a hard time deciding though. I’m hosting a party for her in June. What are your favorite scents? I need ideas on what to stock up on!

3. In May, I’m going to try to participate in two of the photo challenges on Instagram. I’m sure I won’t post to them every day, but there are some fun prompts. I’m doing the popular #fmsphotoaday and a new one called #isewphotochallenge. If you’re on Instagram, my user name is @bethp146.

Happy Thursday!

Random Facts + Favorite Reads

My sweet friend Sara from This Southern Mom nominated me for a Versatile blogger award. Sara just started blogging again with a new name and spiffy new layout, and I always look forward to her posts. Plus, she recently PAINTED her kitchen counters – pretty amazing. Go check it out!

I’m going to be a rule breaker today. I received and fully accepted this award a couple years ago, but I wanted to acknowledge this in some way. Thanks, Sara! Instead of doing the full acceptance, I thought I would just share some random facts and favorite blog reads. It’s been a while since I’ve done either.

Random Facts

1. We are a dachshund family. There’s just something about them. My parents have Shoalie and Lula. Laura and Wes have Betty Jo. We have Bailey and that silly Charlie in the photo above.

2. The only reason I wear glasses is because of an astigmatism. My eyesight is actually normal otherwise. The glasses help with the terrible headaches I get from reading and staring at a computer screen all day.

3. I am a technical writer. I can’t remember if I’ve shared that before.

4. I have always thought it would be fun to design stationery or open my own pen and paper store.

5. I love ice cream. Other than actual homemade, my favorite is Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla.

6. I once got to meet Harper Lee! This probably deserves it’s own post one day, but it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books.

7. John 14 is my favorite chapter in the New Testament.

Favorite Reads

I love reading blogs and finding new blogs to follow. My new Feedly account has quickly filled up. These are some of my favorites:

1. Blue Eyed Bride
Erin is so honest in her writing and impresses me post after post.

2. Lamberts Lately
Leslie is a fellow Bama fan and Alabama blogger. She has an adorable daughter who just turned 1!

3. Loved & Lovely
Ryan is expecting her first child any day. I’ve loved all her posts on getting ready for motherhood.

4. The Heart of Hannah
I actually just found Hannah’s blog this week because someone shared one of her posts on Facebook. It has quickly become a favorite.

5. 12450 Miles
I love Christine’s photography, design, and stories about Spencer!

6. Chasing Big Dreams
This is also a newish read for me. Carrie has such a cute blog, and I love her focus on encouraging others.

7. Kelly’s Korner
Who doesn’t love Kelly’s blog? She’s amazing!

I could go on and on, so I may have to do a favorite reads part 2 post soon. The great thing about blogging is that there is always someone to learn from!

Three Things Thursday featuring Easter Bunny M

1. I made these chocolate chocolate chip cookies from Southern Plate Monday night. I had forgotten how much we like these! If you’re looking for a quick recipe for Easter you might want to give this recipe a try.

2. Last Saturday, M and I helped at an Easter party for the kids from church. The ladies who organized this did such a good job. Everything was so cute, and the kids there seemed to have a blast. I just showed up to help with the crafts on the day of the party. Anyway, I’m just writing about this because I had to share this photo. The kids had a contest to dress up the dads as Easter bunnies. They needed an extra guy and got M to be a bunny. It pretty much made my weekend. So funny! Rebecca and Elise did a great job making M over. Rebecca particularly made sure every inch of his face was covered with paint. Please don’t be mad if you read this, M. I love how sweet and helpful you are! Plus, everyone has already seen this on FB anyway :)

3. I found this set of 3 notebooks at Target yesterday. Target never lets me down!

How has your week been going?

Currently

First of all, I’m sorry that posting has been light this week. It has been one of those stressful weeks where I just couldn’t get it together to write all the posts I wanted to write. Thanks for always reading and supporting this blog anyway!

I thought I would do my own little “currently” post. I’ve seen these posts floating around several different blogs. I’m not sure who came up with it, but I always find them so interesting. Here’s what’s currently going on in my life:

1. Loving – my new morning Bible study routine

20120816-134701.jpg

2. Reading – Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. I haven’t had time to read in what seems like ages, so this is really slow going.

3. Watching – tv is often background noise when I’m quilting. Some recents include HGTV (always), Disney Channel (really), and Friends.

4. Anticipating – College football season!

5. Listening to – Paper Airplane by Alison Krauss & Union Station.

6. Thinking about – oh wow there are so many things going on right now. I feel like my brain is in a million places at once.

7. Working on – a baby quilt, a clothes quilt, an essay, and a new family/home organizational binder. See, my brain is everywhere!

8. Wishing for – a vacation. Other than our honeymoon in 2010, I haven’t been on a real vacation since before I started working all summer in high school. It’s time.

Have a great weekend!

3 Things Thursday – Gold, Silver, Bronze, Batman

20120730-130430.jpg

1. I have been saying for months that it was going to be “all Olympics all the time at our house.” I have been looking forward to watching the games all summer long. Sadly, I missed the first two days due to a busy schedule, but I’m trying to make up for it now. M definitely doesn’t understand my gymnastics obsession.

2. Before Sunday night, I had never seen any of the Batman movies. Fun fact, I’m not really much of a movie person. Since a big group of friends was getting together after church to go see The Dark Night Rises, I went along. I was prepared to hate it or fall asleep. I even wanted to hate it so I could go back to being ignorant about superheroes. Halfway through, my bad attitude changed. I was actually sorta kinda getting into this. I felt like a child discovering something new. My eyes were opened, and now I want to see the other two movies. Sometimes I surprise myself.

3. August already?! I have a ton of sewing to get done this month, and then September kicks off my favorite time of year. The end of 2012 should be exciting around here!

3 Things Thursday – June 21, 2012

1. Bailey had her spotlight time last week, so it’s Charlie’s turn now! Charlie keeps us smiling. She’s a funny, clumsy, playful, and cute little girl. It’s so funny how my two girls have such different personalities.

20120620-204931.jpg

2. A friend from work came over last night to help me with a blanket. She brought incredible homemade bread fresh from the oven. So delicious! Thanks, Roxanne for the help and for the bread!

3. We have 3 couches in our living room right now. Someone gave us a leather one they didn’t need anymore. We want to use it in M’s “man cave”, but it doesn’t fit. It’s driving me crazy in my living room. If you’re reading this M, let’s clean out our guest rooms, please? :)

Crying Over Spilt Salsa

If you and I are friends on Facebook or you were around me the week this happened, you’ve probably already heard this story. Please bare with me!

My first mistake was deciding late on the Sunday evening before Memorial Day that I was going to make homemade salsa to take to my grandparents’ house the next day. I didn’t choose this because I’m some great salsa maker. In fact, I had never attempted making my own salsa ever before. Dumbly, I thought I could do it with no problems. The recipe seemed easy enough, and I really wanted some salsa.

My second mistake was going to Walmart late at night to get the ingredients. By the time I got home, I was tired. It had already been a long weekend. I wasn’t at my best to attempt a brand new recipe at that time.

My third mistake was not making sure the food processor blade was in the food processor before I turned it on. My fourth mistake was touching my mouth with the same towel I used to wipe up spilled salsa ingredients after I had to transfer everything to a mixing bowl when the food processor didn’t work. I should mention that the salsa included freshly chopped jalapenos – ouch. My fifth mistake was putting all the ingredients in the blender when everything else failed. I wasn’t paying attention, so all the juice ran out the bottom of the blender, spread across the counter tops, and tricked down the cabinets.

My biggest mistake in all this was how MAD I got during this incident. I was frustrated with myself because I thought I should be able to make salsa. I transfered this frustration into ANGER when things didn’t go my way. I blamed M because he was the one who washed the food processor blade whose absence started this bad chain of events. I frantically searched for the blade before giving up. I sat in the floor of the kitchen angrier than I have been in a long time as my lips tingled and burned from the jalapeno juice. When M got home, I was still angry. He looked for the blade while I was making the aforementioned mess with the blender. We gave up and went to bed.

Looking back, it’s a funny story. Yet it’s also taught me some important lessons. Lots of little things went wrong. That’s life. It happens. But I let myself get bent out of shape about it all. Why? Part of it is my personality. I’m a perfectionist. The other part was pride. I wanted to have delicious homemade salsa that everyone could ooh and awe over the next day. It’s pitiful to admit, but it was true at the time. Maybe I was getting too big for my briches. This incident humbled me. I learned there is no use crying over spilt salsa.

By the way, we found the food processor blade the next morning. See the photo at the top of this post. It was on the couch of all places and had been chewed up by Charlie. I guess before I realized it was missing, one of the dogs had pulled it out of the cabinet. Life is funny.

Phone Photos – April 28-June 4

My favorite thing about my iPhone has to be the camera. I love always having it with me to capture our daily lives. I was looking back through my Camera Roll and realized I actually do take a bunch of picture. Here’s a “photo dump” of the last month or so.
